Dairy processing facilities run on precisely timed sequences that leave no margin for electrical failure. PDC's Agr1Solutions team has designed and installed dairy systems for milk processors, ingredient manufacturers, and bottling operations throughout the Midwest for decades.

BY THE NUMBERS
Dairy processing operates under layered regulatory requirements from the National Electrical Code (NEC), the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), and the FDA Grade "A" Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), each of which shapes how electrical systems must be designed, installed, and maintained.
Refrigeration accounts for
~50%
of electrical energy consumption
Typical Dairy Plants Run
24/7
production cycles
Efficiency improves by
10–30%
with process automation
The physical environment of dairy processing plants exemplifies the regulatory frameworks that the facilities operate under. Critical process points in a dairy plant, from pasteurization to Clean-in-Place (CIP) sequences to refrigerated storage, require precise electrical control and reliable instrumentation. A temperature deviation during pasteurization is a food safety event, not just an equipment malfunction. That shapes how PDC designs control logic, alarm structures, and data logging across dairy automation projects.

Pasteurization system controls (HTST and batch systems)
Dryer and evaporator controls for powder production
System controls for milk concentration and whey processing
Refrigeration system controls for finished product storage
Continuous process controls for 24/7 operations
Silo level monitoring and controls
CIP system automation
SCADA systems for process monitoring and data collection
Milk receiving and loadout automation
Dairy plants do not have off seasons, and most are not designed for extended shutdowns. Milk arrives on a schedule determined by farm operations, not production convenience. That operating reality means electrical work, whether a new installation or an upgrade to an existing system, has to be planned and executed around continuous production. PDC coordinates dairy projects with the attention to production timing and sequencing that this environment requires, including phased work that avoids interrupting receiving, pasteurization, or refrigeration systems simultaneously. Most dairy projects PDC takes on involve both electrical contracting and automation work on the same scope. Pasteurization controls, CIP sequencing, instrumentation integration, and panel fabrication are not separate contracts handed to separate crews.

Our Commitment
PDC has served Wisconsin dairy processors since 1976, building long-term working relationships with facilities that run every day of the year.
PDC technicians are available to troubleshoot the control systems, panels, and electrical infrastructure of dairy facilities, whether we installed it or not.
We've partnered with dairy professionals for over 50 years because we know that shortcuts in a regulated production environment create compliance risk, not just equipment failures.
Dairy facilities expand in predictable ways: added silos, new pasteurization capacity, additional dryer or evaporator trains, expanded whey processing lines. PDC designs electrical infrastructure with those additions in mind, sizing panels with growth capacity, running conduit pathways that support future pulls, and documenting the automation architecture so that adding a new line does not require rebuilding the control system from scratch.
A separator motor, the drive that controls it, the panel it connects to, and the PLC sequence that coordinates it with the rest of the process are all within PDC's scope. PDC fabricates UL 508A-certified control panels in-house, programs the automation, installs the electrical, and repairs motors through our EASA-accredited shop.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
PDC has completed electrical and automation projects at dairy processing facilities ranging from farm-scale operations to large-scale milk processing and ingredient manufacturing plants, including pasteurization system upgrades, CIP automation installations, SCADA buildouts, and full electrical scopes for facility expansions.
